Baseball Splits with Tigers

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 13/27 Shenandoah University completed its first home ODAC doubleheader Sunday by splitting a pair with Hampden-Sydney.

Shenandoah (11-3, 4-2 ODAC) was a 3-2 winner in the opener before H-SC (10-10-1, 3-2) came back to win 6-2 in the nightcap.

In game one, senior Nick McMahon (2-2) scattered 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings to earn the win. In the middle of the eighth, junior Cody Vorous got a pair of strikeouts to strand the tying run at third base before Michael Scimanico threw a 1-2-3 ninth to post the save.

Shenandoah scored the game-winning run in the fifth on Nick Beall's RBI groundout to second to plate John Wilt.

Wilt led off the frame with an infield single, moved to second via a Corbin Lucas walk and was sacrificed to third.

Michael Paul and Billy Arens led the SU offense with three and two hits, respectively.

Zach Whitaker (3-1) took the game one loss for the Tigers. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.

Hampden-Sydney jumped on freshman starter Phillip Morse (2-1) for two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The Hornets did make matters interesting with two runs in the fourth to make it 5-3, but could get no closer.

Billy Nixon (1-0), the second of three pitchers for the Tigers, got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Senior lefty Luke Rabiej recorded the final 12 outs to earn his fourth save of the spring.

Arens and Dan Powers both had a hit and an RBI for SU in the nightcap.

Christian Hamlett and Jack Elliott had two hits and two RBI each for the visitors.

Shenandoah continues ODAC play on Tuesday by hosting Eastern Mennonite. Play begins at 3:30 with the completion of a suspended game from last week and then the two teams will play their regularly scheduled contest.
