WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 11/12 Shenandoah University won its sixth ODAC baseball game in eight attempts Wednesday afternoon with a 21-5 win over Eastern Mennonite.
The win was actually one of two for the Hornets (13-3, 6-2 ODAC) over EMU (11-10, 1-3) on Wednesday.
Prior to the start of the regularly scheduled contest, the two teams had to complete a suspended game from last week.
With six runs in the top of the 11th, SU dispatched the Royals 13-7 in that contest.
The game was suspended on March 13 in Harrisonburg with the score tied at 10-10 and the Hornets coming to plate in the top of the 10th.
Shenandoah found itself three outs from victory after scoring three runs on two hits, two walks and an EMU error in the 10th.
Except that the Royals had other ideas.
Eastern Mennonite answered with three of its own in the bottom of the frame as it took advantage of four SU errors to tie the contest at 7-7.
The Hornets then banged out the six runs on five hits in the 11th before sophomore Matt Riegler (2-0) worked through a scoreless bottom of the inning to earn the win.
Riegler, the squad's closer, also had the first hit of his collegiate career with an RBI single to right in the top of the inning.
Riegler made his first-ever plate appearance because SU eliminated the designated hitter by inserting Nick Beall into left field in the bottom of the 10th.
Shenandoah jumped to a 5-0 lead in the regularly scheduled game with three runs in the second and two more in the third, but found itself tied as EMU scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Now locked in a 5-5 game, the Hornets completely blew matters open with a 10-spot in the sixth and six more in the eighth.
Coach Kevin Anderson emptied his bench, playing 23 players in the game including five making their first varsity appearance this season.
Shenandoah banged out 18 hits in the victory with J.J. McDaniel getting two hits and three RBI in four at-bats and both Beall and Joe Bittner driving in three runs.
Freshman John Wilt was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
All nine starters got at least one hit.
Michael Scimanico (2-0) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief work. He struck out four.
Tomorrow's game at Franklin & Marshall has been postponed due to the forecast. SU is back in action on Saturday at Randolph-Macon.
