WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 12/12 Shenandoah University completed its week with an ODAC doubleheader split against Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (15-6, 8-5 ODAC) was a 1-0 winner in the opener before the Marlins (7-18, 4-7) came back to win 3-2 in the nightcap.
In game one, freshmen Philip Morse and Michael Scimanico combined to throw a five-hit shutout – Morse (3-1) allowed the five hits in 5 1/3 before Scimanico came on with runners on first and second and one out in the sixth.
The southpaw induced a pair of pop-outs to end the threat and then recorded the final nine outs in order to post his second save of the spring.
The Hornets scored the lone run of the game in the fourth as they loaded the bases with two outs for Billy Arens, who promptly took a Dylan Stoskus (2-5) offering in the middle of his back to bring in that lone run.
Stoskus held Shenandoah to four hits with Corbin Lucas finishing the game 2 for 4 with a double.
VWC touched up game two starter T.J. Campbell (0-1) for two runs in the second and one in the fifth to salvage the split.
The Hornets left eight of the nine runners they left on base in scoring position, including stranding the potential tying run in the ninth at second after catcher Joe Bittner led off the frame by drawing a base on balls.
Corbin Lucas, who had both of the hosts' RBIs, was robbed of a potential game-tying hit on a sliding catch to end the Shenandoah fifth.
Alex Tucci (3-5) threw a complete game in the nightcap for the Marlins. He allowed the two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out eight.
SU continues this homestand on Monday with a 3:30 contest against York (Pa.).
