WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 25/25 Shenandoah University celebrated its baseball Senior Day on Sunday with a 10-7 non-league victory over Mary Washington.
The victory also gives SU (22-9) a sweep of the season series with the Eagles (20-16).
After UMW scored an unearned run in the first, the Hornets tied a run of their own in the second before taking the lead on a Daniel Freshley solo shot in the fourth.
Shenandoah then began to pull away with four runs in the fifth and an additional three in the sixth.
But Mary Washington had other ideas.
Taking advantage of a pitching change, the Eagles got back into the contest with five runs on five hits in seventh to make the score 9-7 in favor of the hosts.
SU was able to answer with one run in the bottom half of the frame as John Wilt scored on a Nick Beall single to center combined with an outfield error.
Relievers Zach Carney, Ryan Mossman, Jon Nicholson, Matt Riegler and Cameron Lundmark combined to get the final nine outs of the contest for the Hornets with Lundmark picking up the save by working a scoreless ninth.
Lundmark posted his sixth save by inducing a 463 double play and a strikeout looking.
Shenandoah banged out 16 hits in the win with senior Nick Beall leading the way with a 4 for 5 day that included a solo home run.
Freshley had four hits as well and fell just a triple short of hitting for a cycle.
Designated hitter Andrew Creamer was 3 for 5 with four RBI. He had a two-run double in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth.
Senior Nick McMahon (3-3) earned the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Shenandoah travels to Gallaudet on Monday for another non-league contest.
