McDaniel Hits for Cycle in Win

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – No. 25/25 Shenandoah University ran its baseball winning streak to six games Friday afternoon with a 15-5 non-league victory at St. Joseph's (L.I.).

The Hornets (26-9) erased an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the second and one in the third before breaking it open with a seven-spot in the fourth.

SU scored at least one run in every inning except the eighth the rest of the way.

Sophomore J.J. McDaniel led the way to the win by hitting for a cycle – he had a triple in the third, an RBI single in the fourth, doubles in the fifth and ninth and a leadoff home run in the seventh.

The second baseman is the first SU baseball player to hit for a cycle since Steve Gober, who is now a rehab coordinator for the Washington Nationals, accomplished the feat in 1996.

McDaniel finished his historic day 5 for 5 with four runs scored and three RBI.

McDaniel's classmate, Daniel Freshley, nearly matched him by going 4 for 5 with a two singles, a double and a home run.

Freshley drove in a game-high four runs.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club had 17 hits in the victory over the Golden Eagles (12-18), including at least one by all nine starters.

Seven of the nine also drove in at least one run.

Junior Andrew Zarobila (1-0), who came on in relief of freshman Eric Liskey in the fourth, pitched the final 5 1/3 to get the victory. Zarobila scattered three hits and struck out three.

The Hornets are off tomorrow and play a non-league doubleheader at Farmingdale (N.Y.) State on Sunday.
