LYNCHBURG, Va. – Fourth-seeded Washington and Lee registered the second straight upset of the 2013 ODAC baseball tournament with a 7-4 victory over No. 23/RV Shenandoah.
The loss puts SU (27-11) into an elimination situation Friday at 2:30 against top-seeded Bridgewater.
The Eagles opened the tournament Thursday with a 3-1 win over Roanoke and would knock the Hornets out of the tournament with a win in tomorrow's contest.
The Generals (19-15) jumped on Shenandoah starter Philip Morse (3-3) for four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
After W&L added one more in the seventh, the Hornets got back into it with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
SU knocked out Generals starter Ian Shaw (7-2) in the process of that three-run rally, but W&L relievers Cory Smith and Nate Plein combined to get the final eight outs of the contest.
Smith allowed one run on three hits before Plein struck out three in his 1 1/3 innings of work to post his first save of the spring.
Shaw allowed three runs on six hits in 6 1/3. He struck out four.
Michael Paul, Dan Powers and Andrew Creamer all drove in runs in the Shenandoah seventh, Paul on a sacrifice fly, Powers on a triple and Creamer on a double.
Corbin Lucas, who scored the Hornets second run, drove in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
J.J. McDaniel finished the evening 3 for 4 with Powers adding two hits.
Will Salley, who had the final RBI in the Washington and Lee fifth, was 3 for 5 for the victors. Three others: Keegan Dolan, Alex Mait and Joe Scalzo, had two hits each.
