Baseball Sweeps Wasps

EMORY, Va. -  Shenandoah University posted its second ODAC baseball doubleheader sweep of the season Saturday afternoon with a pair of close victories at Emory and Henry.

The No. 18/22 Hornets (18-7, 10-6 ODAC) opened with a 7-5 victory before completing the sweep over the Wasps (8-18, 3-9) with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Game one was a back-and-forth battle as SU had leads of 1-0 and 3-1 only to see E&H tie it each time.

The Wasps then scored twice in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

Shenandoah then battled back in the seventh as junior Dan Powers hit a three-run dinger down the left field line to put the Hornets in front for good.

Powers completed his strong start to the day with a solo HR in the ninth.

Freshman Michael Scimanico (4-0), who came on for classmate Phillip Morse in the fourth, earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief work.

Scimanico allowed two runs on four hits and five walks before another freshman, Cameron Lundmark, got the final five outs to earn the save.

Morse and Lundmark both struck out three and Scimanico four.

The save would be one of two that Lundmark had on the day, as he recorded the final five outs of game two to make a winner of classmate Eric Liskey (2-0).

Liskey worked the first 5.0 innings, Darrel Thompson the next 2 1/3 and then Lundmark the final 1 2/3.

With the tying run on third in the ninth, Lundmark had two punchouts to end it.

John Wilt and Michael Paul, who had a home run in the opener, both had two hits in game two.

Paul, Daniel Freshley, Garrett Wooddell and J.J. McDaniel drove in the Hornets runs.

McDaniel had what proved to be the game-winning RBI on a solo HR in the seventh.

Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday in a non-league game at Messiah.
