GRANTHAM, Pa. – No. 25/25 Shenandoah University ran its non-conference baseball winning streak to nine games Tuesday afternoon with a 9-3 victory at Messiah.

Shenandoah (19-7) jumped on the Falcons (8-17) for five runs on three hits in the first to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Sophomores Corbin Lucas and Daniel Freshley each drove in a pair of runs on doubles – Lucas hit his to right and Freshley into short left center.

Senior Cody Smallwood drew a leadoff walk to start the second, which proved to be all for MC starting pitcher Paul Broomell (0-3).

The senior co-captain eventually came around to score an unearned run on a Lucas sacrifice fly.

Broomell allowed six runs (five earned) on three hits and three walks in 1.0 innings of work.

Hornets starter Billy Arens (3-1) allowed one run in the first, but settled in to earn the victory.

Arens allowed the three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out seven in 8 1/3. After seeing his defense commit a pair of errors in the ninth, SU skipper Kevin Anderson turned to Andrew Zarobila to get the final two outs of the contest.

The junior lefty got a flyout and a strikeout to end it.

The Hornets defense also turned a pair of double plays to help out Arens.

Freshley led the offense with a 3 for 4 day that included four RBI. Lucas and designated hitter Andrew Creamer were both 2 for 4.

Lucas drove in three runs.

Shenandoah continues this non-conference string of games with a 6:00 home contest tomorrow night against Catholic.
