Men Drop Heartbreaker

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team saw its bid for a season-opening victory cut short Friday evening with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Washington (Md.).

Sam Wild scored the game-winner for the Shoremen (1-0) in the 104th minute, collecting a loose ball in front of SU goalkeeper Rodrigo Casteriana and knocking the golden goal into the far panel.

Casteriana had no chance on the game-winner, and the Hornets (1-1) found themselves in the OT battle largely thanks to his performance.

Casteriana, a local product out of Sherando H.S., had seven saves in his first collegiate contest.

Two of those, both in the first half, were stellar.

After WC had taken the early lead on a goal in the 12th minute, Shenandoah brought the game back to level in the 60th minute when freshman Tommy Scott back-heeled an Eduardo Santiago service past Shoremen keeper David Myers.

Scott's shot on goal was one of just four for SU on the evening.

Washington peppered Casteriana with 14 shots and had eight of the game's nine corners.

The men travel to Goucher on Sunday for another non-league match.
