WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its first-ever women's soccer victory over Mary Washington Friday night with a 2-1 non-league home victory.
Shenandoah (1-0) saw the Eagles (0-1) take the early lead on a Lizzie Weast goal at the 27-minute mark, but the Hornets rallied.
Sophomore Danielle Burris brought it back to even at 40:03 after taking a service from freshman Kelsie Luddington and hitting an absolutely perfect shot from 20-yards away.
Dribbling down the left side, Burris crossed into the 18-yard box and lofted a bender over the head of UMW keeper Alyssa Goodwin and just inside the right post.
Just less the five minutes into the second half, Burris hit the game-winner by finishing off an Ellen Strom feed.
This tally again traveled across the entire face of the goal before going in.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin Septer had to make just one save in posting the victory in her first-ever collegiate contest.
Shenandoah outshot the Eagles 11-6, including 7-3 in the first half, and took five of the game's six corner kicks.
SU hosts Marymount on Sunday at 11 a.m.
