Volleyball Wins Twice

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team had a solid start to the 2013 season Friday by sweeping a pair of matches at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic.

Shenandoah (2-0) opened with a 3-0 victory over Penn State - Harrisburg before dispatching Dickinson 3-1 in the second match of the evening.

SU won at 14, 20 and 20 in that opening match.

Against the Red Devils, the Hornets built a 2-0 lead with wins at 21 and 19 in the first two sets before DC cut its deficit in half by winning 29-27 in the third.

Coach Jaime Terenzi's team then won at 17 in the fourth to clinch the victory.

Junior Rachel Gross paced Shenandoah in the opening match with nine kills while Jasmine Callahan added five and four others: Haley Smith, Blake Parkes, Ashleigh Tanis and Allie Pieper had three each.

Callahan had a team-high 21 assists while senior Katy Griffith and sophomore Taylor Anderson each posted nine digs.

Gross again was the story in the nightcap, recording a team-high 12 kills with Callahan adding 11 to go along with 22 assists.

Anderson had 30 digs, Samantha Schambach 17 and Parkes 12 to lead the defense.

SU plays Stevenson and Mount St. Mary on Saturday in the final day of competition.
