Denison Sneaks Past Women

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Host Denison University used a late goal to secure a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Shenandoah University Friday evening in the opening round of the Capital University Tournament.

Naomi Barker finished off a Maddy Regan cross in the 87th minute to give Denison (2-1) the victory over SU (2-2).

Barker, sitting just inside the 18-yard box at the left post, found herself wide open as Regan made the cross-goal feed.

After taking in the pass, she slipped her shot past Hornets keeper Erin Septer for the game-winner.

Shenandoah had three shots in the final 90 seconds of the contest, but two were blocked and freshman Leanne Mayo missed wide left.

Sophomore Danielle Burris, who was named ODAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, had the Hornets lone goal. She slipped her shot from the left side just under the crossbar in the 15th minute to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Big Red had taken a 1-0 lead on a Jocelyn Festle goal (also set up by Regan) in the fourth minute.

DU outshot Shenandoah 12-10 and had an 11-3 advantage in corners.

Septer made four saves in the losing effort.

The Hornets complete tournament play on Sunday with a game at host Capital.
