Women Down Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its second ODAC victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 58-44 win at Hollins University.

The Hornets (5-8, 2-2 ODAC) found themselves in a 12-0 hole to Hollins (5-8, 1-4) and used the majority of the first half to claw back into the contest.

SU trailed by three, 21-18, at the break, thanks to a 12-5 run to complete the opening stanza.

After HU scored the opening bucket of the second, coach C.K. Calhoun's club took its first lead with a 7-3 run in just 1:46 – junior Holly Chittenden gave the Hornets the advantage with a three-point play to finish off the run.

Hollins would tie the game with its next field goal, by Kaitlyn Taylor at 14:29, before Shenandoah seized total control with an 11-0 run that ended on a Tiffany Bauer jumper with exactly 12 minutes remaining.

From this point on, the Hornets led by at least nine points and expanded to 14 by the 7:03 mark.

Calhoun's club finished the contest on a 7-2 run with senior Crystal Petrus scoring the squad's final five points from the line.

Sophomore Imani Heggins paced the victors with a co-game-high 20 points with Chittenden adding 17 and Petrus 12.

Chittenden also had 12 rebounds to post her third double-double of the season.

Shenandoah shot 37 percent for the contest and the two teams split 82 rebounds.

SU scored 25 points off of 26 Hollins turnovers.

The women host Bridgewater on Wednesday in a 6 p.m. ODAC contest. This game is also the opener in a doubleheader with the Hornet men.
