WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University suffered through a cold shooting night from the foul line in a 66-61 ODAC men's basketball loss to Bridgewater College Wednesday night.
The Hornets (10-6, 2-5 ODAC) shot just 44 percent (11 of 25) from the charity stripe in the losing effort to the Eagles (9-6, 4-3). After making 6 of 15 in the opening stanza, coach Rob Pryor's club was an even 50 percent (5 of 10) in the second.
Still, SU held a 51-48 lead with 6:42 remaining and trailed by just three, 59-56, following an Avery Green three-point play with 2:45 left.
Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, the Hornets missed dunks on the ensuing two possessions that could have given the Hornets the lead.
BC answered the second missed dunk with two Zach Hunter free throws and were never seriously threatened again.
After falling behind by eight points with 33 seconds left, Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to three, 64-61, following a Bryce Mitchell layup at the 10 second mark.
Bridgewater was able successfully inbound the ball and thanks to another two Hunter free throws, iced the victory.
The Eagles forced 19 SU turnovers with eight steals and scored 24 points off of those miscues. BC, which had a 35-33 advantage on the glass, also outscored the Hornets 36-34 in the paint, 14-4 off the break and 25-16 from bench players.
Green paced the hosts with 21 points with Ed Reddick posting 19 points and 12 boards for the Eagles.
Shenandoah takes to the road Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 ODAC contest at Emory and Henry.
