Men's Hoops Roars Past Lions

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team ran its winning streak to five games Monday night with a 94-82 non-conference victory at Penn State – Altoona.

Shenandoah (8-3) now has matched the win total of the past two seasons combined and owns its longest winning streak since the 2007-08 squad won seven straight.

Trailing 52-44 after PSU-A (2-9) scored 13 of the initial 20 points of the second half, the Hornets seized total control of the contest with a 9-0 run to take a 53-52 advantage following an Avery Green layup at 14:46.

Green, who finished with a game-high 30 points, had five of the nine points during the spurt with Jimi Starks adding the other four.

After the Lions briefly took the lead on a 3-pointer, Shenandoah reeled off 16 of the game's next 17 points to lead 69-56 with 8:59 remaining.

Green capped off this game-clinching run with a 3-ball from the wing.

Shenandoah threatened to blow the Lions out of the gym early, scoring nine of the game's first 11 points in the opening 95 seconds, but saw PSU-Altoona get back into it with a 7-0 run from the 17:22 to 13:58 marks of the first.

SU was able to extend its lead back to five points on two different occasions, the last with 9:31 remaining, before the Lions clawed back again.

This time PSU-A scored eight straight points to take its largest lead of the first, 23-20, with 7:44 left.

Junior Jared Carithers, who had a half-high 11 points, answered for the Hornets by draining his third 3-pointer of the stanza 15 seconds after the Lions took that three-point advantage.

The two teams then traded the lead two times and were tied on five others in the remaining seven minutes of the opening stanza.

In addition to Green's 30, Carithers had 24, Starks 11 and Eli McEathron 10 for Shenandoah.

The 94 points is the highest point production against an NCAA opponent and the second-highest total since Rob Pryor took over the program three seasons ago.

SU shot 46 percent for the game and had a 39-38 rebounding edge.

Shenandoah returns to ODAC play on Saturday with a 3:30 contest at Roanoke.
