Quakers Top Women

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Guilford College sandwiched a 10-point run around halftime Tuesday afternoon to key a 53-44 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah.

Shenandoah (4-8, 1-2 ODAC) led for most of the first half, but saw GC (10-2, 2-1) score the final eight points of the first half to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Freshman Tiffany Bauer had put SU back on top, 16-15, by making one of two from the line with 2:19 to play, but this would be the Hornets final point until senior Crystal Petrus drained a 3-pointer 57 seconds into the second.

In the interim, Guilford got three buckets from Sarah Burnick and two Morgan King layups (with a free throw added to the first) to turn its one-point deficit into a 25-16 lead by the 19:26 mark.

Following Petrus' 3-pointer, the Quakers ran off another run, this one 11-2, to push their lead out to 15 points by the 14:43 mark.

However, Shenandoah refused to fold its collective tent and ended the game on a 17-6 run that provided the final margin.

A 13-2 Hornets spurt from the 6:11 to :54 marks cut the deficit to eight, 50-42, but the hosts would get no closer.

Junior Holly Chittenden had a game-high 16 points for Shenandoah with Imani Heggins adding 11 and Petrus nine.

GC was very balanced in its scoring, with nine of 10 players who saw action registering at least one point and six posting at least six points.  King and Gabby Oglesby led this group with nine points each.

GC owned a 44-29 advantage on the glass that led to a 28-8 bulge in points in the paint.

SU takes to the road Saturday for an ODAC contest at Hollins.
