ASHLAND, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team ran its winning streak to four games with a 4-3 ODAC victory over Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Ashley Cross, the reigning ODAC Player of the Year, scored three goals to push Shenandoah (6-4, 2-0 ODAC) past Macon (2-7, 1-1).
Cross opened the game's scoring with an unassisted tally in the 10th minute and closed out the day's scoring by converting a Taylor Little feed with 7:25 remaining.
In between, she and Little each scored one goal to provide the Hornets with enough offense outlast the Yellow Jackets.
The game was an back-and-forth affair with the two teams combining for 50 shots and 21 penalty corners.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding as SU keeper Jenna Rampale made 13 saves and Macon keeper Shannon McMurray 14.
Thanks to Little's goal, her second of the season, Shenandoah held a 2-0 lead before the game was 30 minutes old.
Macon answered back with goals in the 35th minute (scoring with just three seconds to go in the half) and the 50th minutes.
Cross put the Hornets back in front in the 55th minute before Macon tied it at 3-3 at 58:50.
Just 3:45 later, Cross put SU in front to stay by completing her hat trick.
The Hornets host Sweet Briar on Saturday in a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
