Cazenovia Tops Men's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. – Cazenovia College will play for the 2014 BB&T Tip-Off Tournament title after downing host Shenandoah 100-92 Saturday night in men's basketball action.

Cazenovia (1-0) will play Montclair State in Sunday's 4 p.m. championship game. The Red Hawks defeated Methodist in overtime in the first game of the tournament Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (0-1) takes on former USA South foe Methodist in Sunday's 2 p.m. consolation contest.

The Hornets appeared to be headed for a third straight championship appearance after opening Saturday's game by scoring 17 of the first 25 points of the contest, but then the fire alarm sounded.

Literally.

Leading 17-10 coming out of the first media timeout, SU saw the game halted and Shingleton Gymnasium cleared as a fire alarm was triggered by burning popcorn in the lobby.

Following a 30-minute delay to have the firefighters declare the building safe, the game resumed, but all of the Hornets opening momentum was lost.

The Wildcats went on an 11-4 following the delay to tie the game at 21-21 with 10:23 remaining.

Shenandoah was able to extend its lead back to four points on two occasions only to see Cazenovia score nine straight points from the 8:28 to 6:42 marks and take a five-point, 32-27, lead.

From this point on, the Hornets led on just one more occasion, 40-39 following an Eli McEathron free throw with 2:38 to play, and the Wildcats retook the lead for good on the ensuing trip down the floor.

The margin became eight points, 48-40, at halftime and Shenandoah never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

SU outrebounded Caz 44-37, but the Wildcats had 15 second-chance points to the Hornets 2.

Junior Jimi Starks had 22 points, Aaron Patterson 19, Malcolm Clark 16 and Brandon Pressley 10 to give coach Rob Pryor four players in double figures.

Ryan Gavin had a game-high 26 for Cazenovia.
