ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team won for the fourth time in as many outings this season with a 62-52 non-league victory at St. Mary's of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (4-0) is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season thanks to its victory over St. Mary's (0-3).
Both teams started the game on a cold spell with SU shooting 24 percent (6 for 25) and SMCMD 19 percent (5 for 27) in the opening 20 minutes.
The Hornets, behind a combined 11 points from freshmen Kirstyn Arcata, Breya Wallace and Kanesha Foster, took an 18-16 lead into the break.
A considerably better performance (15 for 31, 48 percent) in the second led to the 10-point win.
The two teams traded the lead eight times and were tied on five other occasions before an Erin French jumper with 4:02 remaining gave the Hornets the lead for good.
SU scored 18 of the game's final 25 points, including eight of 10 in the last 49 seconds, to secure the win.
Wallace paced the victors with 17 points while Arcata added 14 and Holly Chittenden 10.
Foster and French both had 10 rebounds to led the effort on the glass.
Shenandoah outrebounded the 'Hawks 47-37, including 35-10 on the St. Mary's offensive end.
The 'Hawks scored just six second-chance points.
Kerri Kline had a game-high 20 points for the hosts.
SU hosts another Capital Athletic Conference school, Marymount, on Monday at 6.
