EMORY, Va. – Host Emory & Henry turned Shenandoah University over seven times in a 42-34 ODAC football victory Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium.
The Wasps (8-1, 5-1 ODAC) kept their ODAC championship hopes alive by picking off SU quarterback Drew Ferguson six times and forcing one Hornets (4-5, 2-4) fumble.
Despite the seven turnovers and falling into a 28-point hole, Shenandoah had a chance to bring the game back to level due to the efforts of sophomore running back Cedrick Delaney.
Delaney shattered the school and ODAC records for rushing yards by rushing for 321 yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries.
Delaney breaks the previous school record of 207 yards set by Anthony Frates '06 on November 13, 2004 and ODAC record of 310 set by Emory & Henry's Oliver Jordan in 1998.
In addition to the three rushing touchdowns, Delaney had a receiving touchdown in the second quarter.
Trailing 28-0 in the second quarter and 35-7 five minutes into the third, the Hornets battled back with 20 points in the final 25 minutes of the game.
SU made it a one-possession game (eight points) on two occasions, but E&H answered with a TD following Delaney's penultimate touchdown and then forced a fumble and picked off Ferguson for the sixth time on two of the Hornets possessions down the stretch.
Shenandoah's final possession came following a failed E&H field goal attempt with two minutes remaining. SU was able to get one first down before stalling at its own 38. Ferguson was then sacked on 4th and 8 and the Wasps ran out the final 64 seconds of the contest.
The Hornets outgained the Wasps 592 to 436 with 442 of Shenandoah's yards coming on the ground.
The total offense and rushing totals are new school records.
Delaney's record day also brings him to 1174 rushing yards for the season. This breaks the previous season best total of 1157 yards set by Keone Kyle in 2009.
Ferguson finished his afternoon 17 for 34 for 150 yards and one TD against the six interceptions.
E&H quarterback Kevin Saxton was 25 for 50 for 282 yards and four TDs.
Shenandoah completes its season next Saturday at Washington and Lee.
