WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team made its annual Alumni Day a positive one with a 73-70 ODAC victory over Roanoke Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (8-11, 5-5 ODAC) trailed by six points with four minutes to play only to rally for the victory over Roanoke (8-10, 4-6).
Senior Crystal Petrus, who had a game-high 28 points, got the comeback started with a pair of free throws at 3:54 before junior Holly Chittenden made it a one-possession game with a layup nine seconds after Petrus' two free throws.
The Lady Maroons were able to extend their lead back out to five points following a Paxton Gwin layup at 2:08 before SU made its final push with a 6-0 run over the next 75 seconds to take a 68-67 lead with 53 seconds remaining.
Freshman Erin French had a layup off of a Tiffany Bauer assist at that 53-second mark to put SU in front to stay.
Coach C.K. Calhoun's club then closed out the contest by hitting five of eight shots from the free throw line and forcing a crucial turnover with seven seconds left to clinch the victory.
Petrus, who missed her career-high by three points, saw Imani Heggins and Olivia Callan back her up with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Gwin, had 25 and Laurel Hankins 16 for Roanoke in the loss.
Roanoke had a 35-32 advantage on the glass and outscored SU 34-20 on points in the paint.
Shenandoah is back in action on Tuesday at Bridgewater in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
