Eagles Outshoot Women

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Host Bridgewater College used a fast start Tuesday night to key an 82-67 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah.

The Eagles (7-12, 5-6 ODAC) finished off the season sweep of the Hornets (8-12, 5-6) by scoring the initial 10 points of the game and holding the lead for the entire 40 minutes.

Shenandoah battled BC for the entire contest, nearly coming all the way back by the 6:08 mark of the first thanks to a 15-2 run.

Trailing 21-7 at the 10:41 mark, coach C.K. Calhoun's club reeled off 12 straight points in a span of 3:43 to trail by just two, 21-19.

After the Eagles got a Heather Cantrell jumper at 6:31, sophomore Elisa Owens canned one of her two 3-pointers on the night at 6:08 to make the scorer 23-22 in favor of the hosts.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would be the high-water mark as the Eagles ran off a 10-0 run of their own to reassert control of the contest.

Junior Holly Chittenden, who finished with a career-high 19 rebounds to go along with 19 points, finally snapped the scoreless draught with a layup at 1:07.

Bridgewater took a 37-28 lead into the halftime locker room and did not let its lead dip below seven points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Imani Heggins had a game-high 23 points for SU with Owens and Ashley McGhee nine each along with Chittenden's 19.

Chittenden played all 40 minutes of the contest and in addition to the 19 points and 19 rebounds, had four assists and three steals.

Shenandoah shot 29 percent from the field to 48 percent for BC with the Eagles holding a 49-44 advantage on the glass.

Bridgewater had four of its five starters score in double figures with Cassidy Burkholder leading the way with 19.

Cantrell had 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at Emory and Henry. This 2:00 contest with the Wasps will also be a Play4Kay game.
