WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Randolph-Macon outlasted Shenandoah University in an 86-77 ODAC women's basketball victory Tuesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (17-5, 10-3 ODAC) actually had one less field goal than Shenandoah (8-14, 5-8), but made eight more foul shots than the Hornets attempted to key the victory.
R-MC was 28 of 38 (74 percent) from the line to 17 of 22 for SU (77 percent) as it led for all but 13 seconds of the contest.
SU had 29 field goals to the 'Jackets 28.
Both teams made two 3-pointers.
The Hornets, who trailed 42-29 at the break and by 14 points, 53-39, with 15:19 remaining, raced back into the contest by going on a 16-5 run over the next 6:27 of the contest.
Junior Holly Chittenden brought coach C.K. Calhoun's club to that three-point deficit by with a three-point play at 8:52.
Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, Macon scored 11 of the game's next 15 points to re-assert control.
Sophomore Sarah Dixon was able to cut the deficit to four points with a jumper in the lane with 7:32 remaining before R-MC scored six straight to push the advantage back into double digits for the first time since the 14-minute mark.
This lead reached 16 points by the 5:00 mark.
Sophomore Imani Heggins had a career-high 32 points for the hosts and added a game-high 12 rebounds.
Senior Crystal Petrus backed her up with 23 points.
Macon had four players, led by Sarah Parsons' 25, in double figures.
Coach C.K. Calhoun's club hosts Randolph on Saturday at 2:00 in a Senior Day contest.
