Lynchburg Wins Hornets Men's Hoops Battle

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University suffered through a cold shooting night at the free throw line in a 74-67 ODAC men's basketball loss to Lynchburg Saturday afternoon.

The seven-point victory gives Lynchburg (16-6, 9-4 ODAC) a sweep of the season series with SU (12-11, 4-10).

Coach Rob Pryor's club was just 11 of 20 (55 percent) from the charity stripe as LC basically led throughout the contest.

Shenandoah was able to cut its second half deficit to one point, 45-44, following a Jimi Starks jumper at 13:57, but could get no closer.

Manny Hernandez, who finished with 12 points, hit consecutive buckets in the lane before Alex Graves finished off a layup in the lane at 12:11 to push the visitors advantage back out to seven points.

The lead eventually ballooned to nine before Avery Green, who had a game-high 28 points, finally stopped the bleeding with a jumper at 10:47, but the damage was done.

SU would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Lynchburg iced the game with a 5-0 run from the 2:07 to :47 marks that gave the visitors a 72-62 advantage.

Shenandoah then finished the game on a 5-2 run with Green scoring all five of the points on two free throws and a 3-pointer.

LC owned the paint, outrebounding SU 46-35, and had a 52-28 advantage on points in the paint.

The hosts scored 23 of the game's 30 points off of turnovers.

Graves had 18 points for the victors with Austen Arnold adding 17 and Hernandez 12.

Green, the ODAC's leading scorer, was the only SU player in double figures.

The men are back in action on Wednesday night at Virginia Wesleyan.
