WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2014 baseball season Monday afternoon by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Susquehanna University.
The Hornets (2-0) were 3-0 winners in the opener before taking game two 7-1.
Senior Vince Claudio was dominant in game one, striking out 12 and allowing just one hit in the complete game victory.
Claudio (1-0) faced just two batters over the minimum in earning his first victory after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery.
He struck out the side in both the fifth and seventh and had at least one strikeout in all but one inning.
Junior Corbin Lucas drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a double into the right-center gap in the third.
Lucas plated John Wilt, who singled through the right side before stealing second.
Eight of nine starters had at least one hit with Lucas getting two in four at-bats.
Coach Kevin Anderson's club scored two runs in the first, two more in the fourth and three in the sixth to key the 7-1 romp in game two.
Lucas, Michael Paul and Joe Bittner all had two hits with Bittner driving in a pair of runs.
Senior Andrew Creamer drove in a pair of runs with a double to left center in the sixth.
Sophomore Darrell Thompson (1-0) pitched the first six innings of the nightcap, allowing the one run on three hits and one walk.
He struck out five.
Senior Cody Vorous worked a scoreless seventh to close out the sweep.
Susquehanna falls to 0-2 with the two losses.
Shenandoah hosts Mount Aloysius tomorrow at 3:00.
