Baseball Shuts Out Mount

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team recorded its second shutout victory in three games this season with a 16-0 non-league win over Mount Aloysius Tuesday afternoon.

Five SU (3-0) pitchers combined on the eight-hit shutout.

Sophomore Philip Morse went the first 5.0 innings, striking out six and allowing four hits and one walk.

Michael Scimanico, Garrett Wooddell, Matt Reigler and Andrew Zarobila threw an inning each in relief of Morse with Scimanico and Reigler both striking out two and Wooddell one.

Mount (0-1) had six runners reach scoring position, the last in the ninth, with Zarobila working through a two-on, one-out situation by inducing a groundout and a flyout to right.

The Hornets offense banged out 23 hits, including at least one by all nine starters.

Juniors Corbin Lucas, Michael Paul and Daniel Freshley all had three hits, as did sophomore Lew Johnson.

Paul and Freshley both hit home runs, with Paul's fourth inning solo shot proving to be the game-winning run.

Freshmen Jacob Loew and Jason Hager got their first collegiate hits with Loew finishing the day 2 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Freshley finished the day with four RBI, Paul three and both Lucas and Dan Powers two.

After scoring the initial run in the fourth on Paul's dinger to left, SU blew open the contest with seven runs in both the fifth and sixth.

The Hornets sent 11 men to the plate in both frames.

A total of 20 position players saw action in the contest.

Shenandoah is off until hosting Roanoke on Saturday in its ODAC opener. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.

Tomorrow's previously scheduled game at Mary Washington has been postponed.
