Baseball Sweeps Roanoke

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University continued its impressive start to the 2014 baseball season by sweeping an ODAC doubleheader from Roanoke College Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) was a 19-2 victor in the opener before taking the nightcap 13-1.

Roanoke (1-4, 0-2) was held to just five hits on the day with four of those coming in the opener.

SU has now outscored its opponents 58-4 in five games this season.

Senior Vince Claudio was dominant again in the opening game, allowing just two unearned runs on two hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Claudio struck out six and walked four before turning it over to Matthew Wilson for final 10 outs of the game.

Wilson struck out three and allowed just two hits.

Eight of nine Hornets starters had at least one hit in the win with Dan Powers leading the way with a 4 for 5, two RBI afternoon.

John Wilt and Michael Paul both had two hits with JJ McDaniel, Daniel Freshley and Lew Johnson all driving three runs each.

The Maroons scored the initial run of the nightcap before SU answered with two in its half of the first, one in the third and a combined 10 runs in the middle third of the contest.

Sophomore Darrell Thompson (2-0) was as strong as Claudio, allowing the one unearned run on one hit and one walk in 7.0 innings.

He struck out seven.

Powers and Nolan Overby had two hits each with Freshley driving in three runs.

Once again, eight of nine starters had at least one hit.

Shenandoah hosts Gallaudet at noon and Penn St. – Altoona at 3 in a pair of non-league contests.
