EMORY, Va. – Emory and Henry salvaged a split of its season series with Shenandoah by outlasting the Hornets 68-62 in ODAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Wasps (5-16, 3-9 ODAC) jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the opening 9:13 to take total control over SU (8-13, 5-7).
E&H eventually extended its advantage out to 14 points in the opening stanza before taking 38-26 lead into the break.
SU saw its deficit grow to 18 points by the 11:57 mark before turning it on in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Coach C.K. Calhoun's club scored 12 straight points from the 11:35 to 8:46 marks to cut the deficit to six, 53-47, with 8:46 remaining.
Sophomore Sarah Dixon got the run started with a three-point play with sophomore Erin French finishing it on a layup.
The Hornets were able to cut the deficit to four on two occasions, the lead following a Holly Chittenden layup with 1:53 left, only to see E&H coast home by scoring five of the game's final eight points.
Senior Crystal Petrus had a game-high 22 points for the visitors with Chittenden adding 12 and French 11.
The Wasps had four players in double figures with Courtney Puckett pacing this group with 14 points.
Shenandoah hosts Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at 7 in another ODAC contest. This game is also the squad's Play4Kay event.
