SALISBURY, Md. – No. 10 Salisbury University scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings Monday afternoon to key a 5-1 non-league baseball victory over RV Shenandoah.
Shenandoah (7-2), which was held to five hits, left eight runners on base and had three innings in which it placed the first two batters of the frame on base without scoring.
Trailing 3-0 in the seventh, the Hornets loaded the bases with no outs only to line into a double play at first base and then fly out to center to allow Salisbury (9-2) to escape unscathed.
Connor Shockley (2-0) pitched the Sea Gulls to the victory. Shockley, a southpaw, scattered three hits and five walks in the initial 6.0 innings to earn the win.
He struck out three.
Sophomore Philip Morse (1-1) took the loss for the visitors. Morse allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Morse struck out five before turning it over to Cody Vorous in the middle of the sixth.
Corbin Lucas had two hits with Dan Powers, Michael Paul and J.J. McDaniel getting one each for coach Kevin Anderson's club.
Paul scored the Hornets lone run by scampering home from third on a wild pitch in the ninth. He led off the frame with a single down the right field line, moved to second on McDaniel's infield single and third on a Daniel Freshley walk.
Shenandoah continues this trip to the Delmarva Peninsula with a non-league game at Wesley Tuesday afternoon.
