PSU-Altoona Upsets Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 18/RV Shenandoah University saw its six-game baseball winning streak come to an end Friday with an 11-10 non-league loss to Penn St. – Altoona.

PSU-A (4-9) scored the game-winning run on a Jordan Swope single through the left side in the top of the ninth.

Swope single off of junior Matt Riegler (1-1) brought home right fielder Tyler Pastor, who had reached on a one-out single to center.

The winning run was unearned as Riegler committed a throwing error on a Dan Bier comebacker that allowed Pastor to advance to second.

Following a strikeout, Swope threaded in the single for the go-ahead run.

Daniel Freshley reached for Shenandoah (13-3) in the bottom of the ninth, but was cut down on a fielder's choice and then Lions reliever Nate Bennett got a strikeout to end the contest.

The Hornets had led the game 6-4 after three and 9-6 after four only to see PSU-A take its first lead with a four-run sixth.

SU tied the game in the seventh and the two teams were both held off the board in the eighth, setting up Swope to get the game-winning hit in the ninth.

The two squads split 32 hits with Corbin Lucas, Michael Paul, Dan Powers, Andrew Creamer, Nolan Overby, Lew Johnson and Freshley all getting two each for the hosts.

Creamer and Johnson both drove in two runs.

Riegler allowed the one unearned run on two hits and 2.0 innings of work. He struck out three.

Shenandoah is back in action at noon Saturday in an ODAC doubleheader against Randolph-Macon. Vince Claudio and Darrell Thompson are the Hornets expected starters.
