Baseball Splits with Macon

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 18/RV Shenandoah University maintained its position at the top of the ODAC baseball standings by splitting a doubleheader with second place Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (14-4, 9-1 ODAC) was a 14-13 victor in the opener before R-MC (11-8, 6-2) came back to win 5-3 in the nightcap.

The Hornets jumped all over the 'Jackets in the opener, scoring six runs in the first and another five in the fifth to help take a 13-4 lead.

Macon refused to fold its tents, however, putting up a seven-spot in the sixth that chased SU starter Vince Claudio (4-0).

Claudio allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Garrett Wooddell got the next six outs before Matt Riegler had three strikeouts in the final 1 2/3 to post the save.

R-MC starter Daniel Byrd (3-2) lasted just 1/3 of an inning. He gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits while facing 10 batters.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club banged out 16 hits in the win with Michael Paul going 3 for 5 with an RBI and five others posting two hits ech.

Andrew Creamer was 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Matt Fischgrund (2-1) had 10 strikeouts for the 'Jackets in the game two victory.

Macon took the lead with two in the third and kept Shenandoah at bay with one in fourth and two more in the sixth.

SU plated single runs in the fourth through sixth innings with Paul and Joe Bittner connecting for solo home runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively.

Darrell Thompson (4-1) lost for the first time this spring after giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks in 6.0 innings.

Thompson struck out five.

Bittner had three hits and Paul two to lead the Hornets offense.

Shenandoah hosts Muhlenberg on Sunday at 2 in a non-league contest. The Mules are coached by former SU standout Tod Gross '02.

Note: The game one win was Anderson's 450th as a college head coach.
