Baseball Clinches ODAC Tournament Berth with Sweep

LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 15/21 Shenandoah University clinched its place in the upcoming ODAC baseball tournament with a doubleheader sweep over RV/No. 26 Lynchburg College Saturday afternoon.

The SU Hornets (25-6, 14-2) were 15-2 victors in the opener before taking out the LC Hornets (20-8, 8-7) 11-6 in the nightcap.

With the two wins, Shenandoah can finish no worse than sixth in the league.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club has four ODAC games remaining, one at Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow, a doubleheader at Washington and Lee on Tuesday and home versus second-place Bridgewater on Thursday.

The ODAC Tournament begins one week from Thursday at Lynchburg City Stadium.

SU got a second consecutive complete game performance from sophomore Darrell Thompson (7-1) in the opener.

Thompson allowed the two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and no walks while striking out eight.

His offense helped out by scoring runs in the first four innings, including two each in the first and second and four in the fourth.

After being held off the board in the fifth, sixth and seventh, Anderson's club erased any remaining doubts as to the outcome with a six-run eighth.

J.J. McDaniel and Nolan Overby homered in the game, with Overby earning his the hard way by hitting the first inside-the-park home run of his career.

McDaniel put Shenandoah on top to stay with a two-run dinger two batters into the contest.

McDaniel drove in four runs and Overby three.

Lew Johnson backed up those two with a 3 for 3 contest that included two RBI and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Shenandoah erased a 4-2 deficit with a five-run fifth and added two runs in each of its final two at-bats to complete the sweep.

Sophomore Michael Scimanico (2-0) won his second straight start by pitching the initial six innings before senior Cody Vorous earned the save by working the final three.

Vorous struck out three and allowed one run on three hits and one walk.

The top five hitters in the lineup: Billy Arens, McDaniel, Corbin Lucas, Michael Paul and Overby, had a combined 11 hits with Johnson adding another three from his No. 9 spot.

Arens, Paul, Overby and Johnson all drove in two runs.

Shenandoah completes its week with a makeup contest at Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow.
