Baseball Sweeps Wasps

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 17/24 Shenandoah University maintained its position atop the ODAC baseball standings by sweeping a doubleheader from Emory and Henry Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (22-5, 12-2 ODAC) was a 5-2 victor in the opener before taking the nightcap 9-8 over the Wasps (8-17, 5-7).

Sophomore Darrell Thompson (6-1) went the distance the opener for SU, allowing the two runs on five hits and one walk.

He struck out six to throw the Hornets second consecutive complete game and the second of his career.

The offense gave Thompson all of the support he would need by scoring three runs on three hits in the fourth.

Dan Powers, Andrew Creamer and J.J. McDaniel all drove in runs in the frame with Powers and McDaniel sandwiching a single and a double, respectively, around an RBI groundout from Creamer.

After E&H cut the deficit to two runs with a single run in the sixth, SU pushed across an unearned run in the eighth to extend its lead back to three runs.

Thompson worked around a leadoff double in the ninth by getting a fly to right, groundball to second and a pop to third to close it out.

Powers, Billy Arens and Nolan Overby all had two hits in the game one win.

A six-run third made game two look like it was going to be an easy victory for the Hornets, but Emory & Henry had other ideas.

Down to their last out, the Wasps strung together a single, a catcher's interference and a walk to load the bases against junior closer Matt Riegler.

After E&H scored two runs on an infield error to make the score 9-8, Riegler slammed the door by inducing Connor Bronson to groundout to first base.

Arens led the offense with a 3 for 5 nightcap with Creamer contributing two hits and two RBI.

Matthew Wilson (2-0) earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed one run on five hits.

Shenandoah travels to York (Pa.) on Monday for a 3:30 contest.
