ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team opened up its 2014 season with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's of Maryland.
Shenandoah (2-0) opened the day with a 3-1 win over the host Seahawks before sweeping Dickinson 3-0 in the nightcap.
Against SMCM (0-1), SU started with a 25-22 win in the first set before the Seahawks (0-1) evened the match with a 25-20 victory in the second.
Coach Jaime Terenzi club then clinched the match trimuph with wins at 21 and 15, respectively, in the final two sets.
Senior Rachel Gross led the Hornets offense with 11 kills while sophomore Rachel Roberts and freshman Elizabeth Lamont added seven each.
Those three women were set up by Rachel Cerretani's 25 assists.
Freshman Brandi Griffith paced the defensive effort with 21.
The Hornets won at 18, 22 and 17 in sweeping the Red Devils in the team's second match of the afternoon.
Lamont had 12 kills and Gross 10 to lead the offense against DC with Blake Parkes backing them up with nine kills.
Lamont and Griffith had nine digs each.
Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday in a non-league match at Lancaster Bible.
