WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team opened up its 2014 home schedule in style Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 non-league victory over Penn St. – Altoona.
The Hornets (3-3) sandwiched a pair of Brian Maye goals around one from PSU-A (1-4) in taking a one-goal lead into halftime.
After the Lions tied it at 2-2 midway through the second half, Nate Long netted the game-winner on a penalty kick with 1:04 to play.
Maye opened the day's scoring as he corralled a long through pass from Jake Keiser, and after dribbling past one defender, found himself with wide open goal as Altoona keeper Jonathan Fudyal had come well off his line.
Maye put the Hornets back on top in the 41st minute by taking advantage of a Lions giveway right on the doorstep. Once Maye earned possession, he again had to only tap the ball into a wide open net.
SU outshot PSU-A 15-6 and took four of the six corner kicks on the day.
Shenandoah is back in action again on Wednesday night in a non-league game at Marymount. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
