FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University gave No. 18 Mary Washington all it could handle following a 3-2 non-league field hockey loss Sunday afternoon.
Mary Washington (6-1) won in penalty stroke shootout over the Hornets (2-4).
The Eagles outscored SU 3-2 in the shootout and scored the winning goal on the final shot of the shootout session.
Senior Ashley Cross tied the game at 2-2 in regulation for the Hornets with her goal off of a Lauren Kesler assist in the 68th minute.
Cross' goal followed freshman Morgan Lingo's initial tally of the game for SU when she scored unassisted in the 46th minute.
Presha Merritt and Kelani Bailey scored in the shootout session for the Hornets before Cross, Lingo and Tori Finney missed to set UMW up to win it with three conversions.
Mary Washington outshot SU 37-11 and had a 35-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Hornets keeper Jenna Rample played outstanding with a school record 28 saves.
SU is back in action on Saturday in a non-league game at Stevenson.
