WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Christopher Newport scored a pair of first half goals on its way to a 3-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.
Playing for the first time as not conference opponents, the Captains (4-1-2) scored in the 36th and 45th minutes to pull away from SU (1-5-1).
The win also comes in the first meeting between the two programs since Shenandoah captured the 2011 USA South Conference title with a 1-0 win over CNU in the USA South Tournament Championship game.
That contest was the Hornets last in the USA South, and Christopher Newport left the league one year later to join the Capital Athletic Conference.
Victoria Perry scored the game-winner for CNU when took a through pass from Kimmy Kersteins and was able to redirect it around SU keeper Erin Septer.
The Captains added an insurance goal with 47 seconds to play in the first before Perry scored again, this time unassisted against backup goalkeeper Nicole Pratt, in the 65th minute.
Christopher Newport outshot Shenandoah 19-7 and had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Septer and Pratt combined to make 11 saves.
SU returns to ODAC play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Sweet Briar.
