Royals Pull Away from Women

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Host Eastern Mennonite maintained its spot at the top of the ODAC women's basketball standings with a 75-41 victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

The Royals (12-3, 6-1 ODAC) held Shenandoah (5-11, 1-6) to just three second half field goals on their way to the victory.

EMU took control midway through a first half that featured two ties and four lead changes by scoring the final 12 points of the first half.

Freshman Breya Wallace had given the Hornets a 24-22 lead with her jumper at 4:05 only to see Shakkeerah Sykes tie it for the Royals on the hosts next trip down the floor and then put her club on top to stay with two free throws at 3:16.

Shenandoah was then held without a point for the initial 5:54 of the second, a period in which EMU expanded its lead from 12 points to 23.

Junior Erin French finally snapped the scoreless streak for SU with a jumper at 14:06.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would prove to be the high-water mark of the second as Eastern Mennonite continued to apply the pressure.

The Royals maintained at least a 29-point lead for the final 10:10 of the contest and pushed it out to a game-high 36 points on two separate occasions.

French paced the Hornets with 10 points while Holly Chittenden had eight of the team's 36 rebounds.

Sykes had a game-high 14 points for the victors, who played 16 players.

Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest against Randolph.
