WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Virginia Wesleyan led throughout in a 55-38 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.
The Marlins (12-6, 6-3 ODAC) held SU scoreless for the initial 9:55 of the contest to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Kirstyn Arcata, who led the Hornets with 11 points, finally snapped the scoreless drought by converting a fast break layup at the 10:05 mark of the first.
Shenandoah had missed its first 12 shots from the field and turned the ball over three times prior to Arcata's bucket.
In that same span, VWC scored 16 points put itself in total control of the contest.
After going into the half trailing by 16, 33-17, SU scored 14 of the first 22 points of the contest to cut the deficit to 10, 41-31, following a Holly Chittenden free throw with 9:47 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, this would be as close as the Hornets would come as Virginia Wesleyan scored the next 14 points of the contest and coasted home to the 17 point victory.
Chittenden backed up Arcata with eight points and is now 25 points from 1000 for her career.
Nancy Kelly had 14 points and 16 rebounds for victors.
VWC owned a 49-30 advantage on the glass.
Shenandoah completes its three-game homestand on Saturday with a 2:00 contest against Roanoke.
