Women Down Maroons

WINCHESTER, Va. - Clutch foul shooting down the stretch keyed a 57-51 ODAC women's basketball victory for the Shenandoah University Hornets over Roanoke College Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (7-12, 3-7 ODAC) won for the second time in three outings as it canned six of its final seven free throws in the last 3:16 of the contest to close out Roanoke (7-12, 3-7).

SU shot 11 of 15 (73 percent) from the line in the game, including 9 of 13 in final 20 minutes.

The contest featured seven lead changes and four ties with the Hornets finally taking the lead for good on a Breya Wallace jumper with 4:12 remaining.

Wallace' jumper started a 6-0 run in a 79-second span that gave the hosts a five-point, 51-46, lead with 2:53 to play.

Senior Holly Chittenden, who led the victors with 11 points and is now just 14 points from reaching 1000 for her career, capped that 6-0 spurt with a three-point play.

The Maroons were able to cut the deficit to two points thanks to two Allson Yeaw free throws and a Meghan Gadell 3-pointer, but Erin French answered with a runner in the lane for the Hornets before Wallace canned a pair from the charity stripe with 10 seconds left to clinch the victory.

Shenandoah trailed by as many as six points in the first half before scoring 12 of the final 17 points of the first to take a 23-22 lead at the break.

SU expanded this lead to eight early in the second before Roanoke rallied to take its first lead of the second on a Cary Beahm layup with 13:10 remaining.

The two teams remained within five points of one another until Wallace' final free throw of the contest.

French backed up Chittenden with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Beahm had a game-high 18 points for the visitors.

Shenandoah owned a slight, 35-33, advantage on the glass.

The two teams both shot 40 percent from the field.

SU takes to the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at Bridgewater.
