BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Holly Chittenden achieved a personal milestone in Shenandoah University's 61-49 ODAC women's basketball loss at Bridgewater College Wednesday evening.
Chittenden, thanks to a pair of free throws with 1:54 remaining, became the 17th woman in program history to score 1000 career points.
She is the second consecutive SU player to crack the 1000-point barrier from the free throw line. Avery Green '14 accomplished the feat for the men with a free throw in the midst of an 82-67 victory at Roanoke on January 11, 2014.
Bridgewater (10-9, 5-6) led for the final 37:28 of the game Wednesday night in completing the season sweep over SU (7-13, 3-8).
The Eagles, who led 28-19 at the break, had a 12-point advantage on two occasions in the first half and an 11-point early in the second only to see Shenandoah roar back into a contest.
Starting with an Ashley McGhee 3-pointer 46 seconds into the second half and finishing with a Breya Wallace layup at 8:42, the Hornets outscored their hosts 20-10 in a span of 10:32 to make the score 40-39 in Bridgewater's favor.
The Eagles then reasserted control with an 8-2 run in the next 1:44, eventually expanding the lead to nine points with 2:20 remaining.
Chittenden's two free throws came next, but BC coasted home to the win by scoring nine of the final 13 points of the contest.
Chittenden and Wallace both had 14 points for the Hornets with Cassidy Burkholder matching that output for the hosts.
Bridgewater had a 45-26 advantage on the glass with Heather Cantrell and Kaitlyn Lehan both pulling down 10 boards each.
Chittenden, with nine rebounds, just missed her 22nd career double-double.
Shenandoah continues this road trip on Saturday at Guilford in a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
