WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Eastern Mennonite University used a significant rebounding advantage to rally for an 83-73 ODAC men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.
EMU (9-3, 2-1 ODAC) outrebounded Shenandoah 56-36 to help itself erase a seven-point halftime deficit.
The 20-rebound advantage also led to a 25-11 bulge in second chance points for the victors.
SU (1-11, 0-3), despite being outrebounded by 31-20 in the opening stanza, took that 41-34 lead into the break on the strength of 42 percent shooting from the field and five successful 3-pointers.
Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium faithful, the Hornets missed six of their first seven shots from the field in the second and could only watch as EMU seized control with a 19-4 run to start the second.
Trailing 74-59 with just more than five minutes remaining, Shenandoah roared back in it by scoring 12 of the game's next 13 points in 3:03 to cut the deficit to 75-71 with 1:57 remaining.
This would be as close as SU would come, however, as the Royals closed out the game with an 8-2 run.
Senior Jared Carithers, who had 10 of the Hornets 12 points during that last chance run, led all scorers with 23 points.
Malcolm Clark, who started the run with a fastbreak layup, added 18.
Falk had 13 points and 18 rebounds for EMU.
The Hornets travel to Emory and Henry for a 4 p.m. ODAC contest Saturday afternoon.
