Women's Hoops Drops Opener

TOWSON, Md. – Host Goucher College held Shenandoah University to a cold shooting afternoon in a 61-36 non-league women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (0-1) was held to just 21.2 percent shooting (14 of 66) as the Gophers (1-0) won in new coach Patrick Daniel's first game as GC head coach.

"We had a ton of good looks today against their zone," SU head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said.

"We just couldn't get anything going offensively."

Goucher used a 9-3 over the final 4:43 of the first period to take a 15-12 lead after one and expanded that lead out to eight points, 30-22, by the halftime break.

The Gophers shot an even 40 percent in the opening 20 minutes to the Hornets 23.7.

Leading 51-32 heading into the final stanza thanks to a 21-point third quarter, Goucher held Shenandoah to just four points over the final 10 minutes to coast home to the victory.

Sophomore Kirstyn Arcata led the visitors with 12 points with juniors Erin French and Olivia Callan adding six each.

GC also owned a 55-49 advantage on the glass.

SU continues this road trip Tuesday with a 7 p.m. non-league game at Hollins. This is the first of two meetings this season with HU; the later matchup, in Winchester on January 23, will count as an ODAC contest.
