Women Dominate Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2015-16 season Tuesday night with a 70-48 victory at Hollins.

The game with Hollins (1-2) was a non-conference contest; the two ODAC foes face-off in a league game in January.

Shenandoah (1-1) jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one, expanded that advantage by additional two points in the second and then coasted home over the final 20 minutes of play.

Trailing 7-4 after Nikki Valencia rolled in a layup for the hosts at 6:22 of the first, coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club ended the period on an 11-2 run to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The Hornets first pushed the lead into double digits with 7:44 to play in the second and kept it there for good following a Shannon Kuhn 3-pointer with 5:30 remaining in the third.

The lead did not dip below 15 points for the final 7:28.

SU held HC to just 25 percent shooting (16 of 63) in the game, including an 18 percent performance (6 of 34) in the second half.

Sophomore Kirstyn Arcata led all scorers with 21 points while Kuhn had 11 and Mia Moore 10 off the bench.

Erin French helped SU to a 47-14 advantage on the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Jewellanna Parfitt had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts.

Shenandoah is back in action this weekend at the Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley. The Hornets face the host Dutchmen in the first round and either Medgar Evers or Fairleigh Dickinson on day two.
