ANNVILLE, Pa. – Host Lebanon Valley used a strong second quarter to a key a 70-51 victory over Shenandoah University in the opening game of the 2015 Rinso Marquette Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (1-2) trailed by just one, 14-13, after the first period, but saw the Dutchmen (2-1) score 20 of the 27 points in the second stanza to take a 34-20 lead into the break.
LVC opened with a Lexie Lentz layup 14 seconds into the period, jump starting a 7-0 run that expanded the lead out to 21-13 by the 6:35 mark.
Junior Erin French, who led the Hornets with six first-half points, finally ended the run with a jumper at 6:22.
The Dutchmen answered with another run, this one 8-0, to extend their lead to 14 points 4:12 before halftime.
The two teams them split the final 10 points of the half.
The Hornets battled Lebanon Valley nearly even in the third, only being outscored by one point, before the Dutchmen coasted home by outscoring SU 19-15 in the fourth.
French led SU with 13 points with Shannon Kuhn adding 12 and Kanesha Foster eight.
Lebanon Valley, thanks to a 42-25 advantage on the glass, outscored Shenandoah 12-5 in second chance points.
"We played a very experienced team tonight," Shenandoah coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We played hard and fought back - I was very proud of that.
"We just need to do a better job of limiting our lapses. We are learning."
The Hornets complete tournament play tomorrow with a 1 p.m. contest against the loser of the Medgar Evers/FDU-Florham contest.
