Women's Hoops Wins Consolation

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team bounced back Sunday to take the consolation contest of the 2015 Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley with a 62-38 victory over Medgar Evers.

After scoring the final five points of the first period to take a 15-13 lead, Shenandoah (2-2) asserted total control of the contest by outscoring Medgar Evers (0-3) 14-2 in the initial 5:40 of the second.

SU never let its lead fall below 11 points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Kanesha Foster, who led a balanced attack with 10 points and was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts, had four of the Hornets 14 points during that game-changing run.

Foster's classmate, Kirstyn Arcata, had five points during this same span including the run-capping 3-pointer.

Any thoughts of a Cougars second-half comeback were quickly extinguished as Shenandoah scored 16 of the 22 points in the period.

Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's team held Medgar Evers to just a combined 11 points in the middle two quarters.

All 13 women in uniform played at least 10 minutes Sunday and 12 of the 13 scored at least one point.

"It was a great team win," Smeltzer-Kraft said "We had a solid effort all the way around.

"Kanesha had a great weekend attacking the rim and on the boards. I am very proud of her effort."

Shenandoah continues this season-opening road trip with a Tuesday 7 p.m. non-league game at Hood.
