Bishops Run Past Men

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Former USA South Conference rival N.C. Wesleyan sandwiched a big run around halftime to pull away for an 85-68 men's basketball victory Sunday over Shenandoah at the 2015 South Region Challenge hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

With Shenandoah (2-2) leading 29-28 following an E.J. Baltimore free throw with 1:44 to play in the first, N.C. Wesleyan (2-2) proceeded to score the final four points of the half and 22 of the initial 31 points of the second to take a commanding 54-38 lead with 13:40 to play.

The Bishops had four Devontae Williams dunks and four 3-pointers during the run while forcing two turnovers and seeing SU miss five shots from the field during that 6:20 span.

NCWC extended its lead out to 20 points by the 6:18 mark before coasting home to the 17-point victory.

Junior Aaron Patterson led the Hornets with 19 points with freshman Gabriel Gonzalez adding 17 in his first career start.

DJ Weaver had 19 points, Brandon Brown 18 and Williams 15 for the Bishops, who shot a sizzling 57.1 percent from the field in the second half and owned a 42-28 advantage on the glass.

SU shot 51 percent for the game.

Shenandoah is off until hosting the BB&T Classic next weekend. The Hornets face Franciscan (Ohio) on Saturday at 8 with William Peace taking on Elizabethtown in the 6 p.m. contest. Sunday's consolation and championship are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
