Women's Soccer Wins on Late Goal

WINCHESTER, Va. - Second-seeded Shenandoah University advanced into the ODAC Women's Soccer Tournament semi-finals thanks to a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Randolph-Macon Wednesday evening.

Junior Alysha McCleaf scored with just 39 seconds to play to push SU (13-6-1) past the Yellow Jackets (8-9).

Shenandoah now advances to a Saturday semi-final against sixth-seeded Roanoke. The Maroons advanced on penalty kicks over third-seeded Washington and Lee Wednesday afternoon.

The SU/Roanoke game, as well as Sunday's championship contest, will be played at Shellenberger Field on the Lynchburg College campus.

McCleaf's goal, her third of the season, was set up by a Kelsie Luddington assist.

Approximately 20 yards from goal, Luddington, with her back to the goal, tapped the ball outside to McCleaf.

McCleaf, who leads the Hornets with six assists on the year, took one dribble and lofted a shot over Macon keeper Elizabeth Blanco and into the right panel.

Shenandoah dominated play, outshooting the 'Jackets 18-5 and taking six of the game's nine corners, but Macon stayed in the game thanks to nine Blanco saves.

"That is playoff soccer for you," SU coach Liz Pike said. "The playoffs are all about gut plays and who wants it more at that point in time. We got lucky tonight and are excited to be moving on."
