No. 11 CNU Outlasts Men's Hoops

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – No. 11 Christopher Newport University advanced into the championship game of its own tournament with an 80-69 men's basketball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday evening.

The Captains (12-0) advance to Wednesday's 6 p.m. championship game versus the University of Scranton. The Royals defeated Stevenson 81-67 Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of the tourney.

Shenandoah (3-7) faces Stevenson (3-8) in a 4 p.m. consolation contest Wednesday afternoon.

SU and CNU traded the lead eight times and were tied on three other occasions in the opening 5:38 of Tuesday's contest, but Christopher Newport seized the lead for good with an 8-0 run that took just 57 seconds.

With Shenandoah leading 12-9 following a Malcolm Clark 3-pointer at 12:38, the Captains answered with a Rayshard Brown 3-pointer 19 seconds after Clark's and then took the lead for good on a Marcus Clark 3-point play at 12:06.

Two Tim Daly free throws expanded the CNU lead to five points before an Antwan Pittman layup at 11:04 appeared to halt the hosts' run.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, Christopher Newport reeled off another run, this one 10-0 over the next 2:38, to push the lead out to 27-14 by the 8:06 mark.

The two teams would then split the final 20 points of the stanza to send CNU into the halftime break with a 27-24 advantage.

Shenandoah opened the second with an 8-3 run, but was unable to cut the deficit to less than eight points until Dominic Steward hit a pair of free throws at the 36-second mark to make it 74-67 in favor of the victors.

Christopher Newport then scored six of the game's final eight points to provide the final margin of victory.

Clark led the Hornets with 19 points with EJ Baltimore adding 13 and Pittman 10.

Clark had his second straight double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.

SU shot 42 percent to the Captains 37 percent and had a 43-40 advantage on the glass.
