NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Shenandoah University dug itself out of a double-digit second half deficit, but was unable to hold on as Stevenson University escaped with a 63-62 victory over the Hornets Wednesday in the CNU Captains Shootout consolation contest.
Trailing 33-22 at the break and by 16, 42-26, with 16:21 to play, Shenandoah (3-8) roared back to take a six-point lead over Stevenson (4-8) by the 4:31 mark only to see the Mustangs rally.
Leading 55-49 following a Malcolm Clark layup at the 4:31 mark, SU watched Stevenson score 14 of the game's next 18 points in a span of 3:59 to steal back the lead.
Erik Fisher, who led all scorers with 28 points, had 10 of the 14 points during the run. His layup at the 36-second mark gave the Mustangs the lead for good.
Junior E.J. Baltimore, who had a career-high 22 points and was named to the All-Tournament team, provided the Hornets final points on the night with a 3-pointer at the four-second mark.
Clark stole the ensuing inbounds pass, but he was unable to get set for a game-winning shot before time expired.
Clark had 15 points, all in the second half, and Antwan Pittman added 11.
Stevenson had a 46-30 advantage on the glass that led to a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint and 14-7 in second chance points.
Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday, January 6 in a 7 p.m. home ODAC contest against nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
